This piece is made by ceramicist Maruta-san at Jugomori Kiln in Hoshino village in Yame, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Maruta-san founded Jugomori Kiln to revive Hoshino Yaki, a local ceramic tradition that was nearly lost in the 19th century. His ceramics are made using clay from the Hoshino area – the same landscape where some of the tea we source is grown.
He works with a firing technique calledkushime yohen. The pieces are left unglazed and carefully placed in the kiln with straw, allowing fire and ash to create the final colours and patterns.
The subtle, almost iridescent shades are created entirely during the firing, making each piece unique.
