Genta Yamamoto Chawan (Matcha bowl)

Introducing our handcrafted one-of-a-kind matcha bowl (chawan) by renowned ceramicist Genta Yamamoto. Born in 1942, Yamamoto-san has dedicated his life to reviving traditional Japanese pottery. In 1969, he established his Kiln in Hoshinomura, Fukuoka Prefecture, specializing in Hoshinoyaki teaware. The traditional and local style from this area, dating back to the Edo Period, had nearly vanished until Yamamoto-san’s efforts to restore it and brought the Hoshinoyaki style back to life!

Each piece is meticulously crafted, reflecting Yamamoto-san’s deep respect for traditional techniques. The bowl comes presented in a handmade wooden box, with his signature handwritten on. We brought home this teabowl after visiting his studio and home.

For a truly immersive experience, we highly recommend pairing this chawan with our locally produced matcha from Hoshino Seichaen, a small-scale tea producer located just a few kilometers from Yamamoto-san’s kiln. Drinking locally made matcha from a locally crafted chawan creates a beautiful harmony between ceramic artistry and tea culture, both deeply rooted in the same landscape of Hoshinomura.
