Petr Sklenička has been pursuing a pottery dream since the age of eleven (2010), initially guided by parents and grandparents. Tea became a central influence at the age of eighteen, giving the clay work a new and meaningful direction. Today, the focus lies on creating teaware, with an emphasis on detail and functional qualities.
The majority of Petr’s pots are fired in a wood-burning kiln, a technique that allows exploration of a wide range of materials and methods. Guided by traditional recipes, Petr prepares glazes and clay bodies suited to the specific firing process and the placement within the kiln. Charcoal reduction is often used to achieve a dark, matte surface that harmoniously contrasts with other glazed pieces.
Wood firing holds deep ritual significance for him. It is experienced as the moment when the pots come alive — the completion of the making process and the beginning of a new chapter in each pot’s life.
Inspiration arises from the surrounding natural world. Staying in close touch with nature is essential to Petr’s work, and both tea and clay serve as mediums for deepening that connection. The delicate textures and colors of nature continue to fascinate and inspire. Part of the work incorporates local materials gathered near his home, while further inspiration is drawn from traditional forms found in Eastern tea and pottery cultures. Their perfect shapes, curves, and highly functional proportions remain a constant source of admiration.
