The first feature one notices with this bowl is the crane poised on one leg engraved on the face of this chawan. Another feature is that the walls are high, known in Japan as a barrel form (tsutsu gata) chawan giving suitable space for the crane to stand in the form. Other details to notice are the free brush stroke of iron oxide which create the brown colouring on the pale yellow body gives a sense of dynamism as if it is windy but the crane remains still and calm with one leg dipped in the pond.
